This update applies exclusively to on-premise/private cloud customers who have enabled BI Categorization. If you have disabled this feature, no action is required.
You can check your status from the Settings > System Health screen. If it displays Categorization: Enabled, you must update your BI classification.
Please update your BI classification before June 17 to avoid any disruption to your BI reports. This deadline is driven by our transition to TeraCat.
Here is exactly what you need to know about how this affects your data:
Before June 17: All data will remain fully available and accessible.
After June 17 (If not updated): Your BI reports will temporarily stop receiving new data. However, no data will be lost.
Once you update to Teracat: Full data flow will resume immediately, and any missing data from the gap period will backfill automatically. (For example, if you update on June 20, the missing data from the previous 3 days will appear right away).
If you are unable to complete the update on time for any reason or wish to disable the BI Classification entirely, please reach out to our support team for assistance.
Introduction
We are thrilled to introduce TeraCat, our powerful new categorization engine, built specifically for a large volume of apps and websites processing. This replaces our previous generation of categorization engine with a modern, intelligent solution.
Why TeraCat?
Traditional categorization engines match domains against manually maintained lists that quickly age as the web changes daily. TeraCat breaks this mold. TeraCat interprets the actual meaning and structure of a URL instead of just looking it up. This allows it to accurately classify new, niche, and previously uncategorized apps/sites on the fly.
Key Features / Benefits
Precision Categorization: Automatically prioritizes specific, user-friendly categories (e.g., "Storage Services") over vague ones ("Computing & Internet" or "Uncategorized"), resulting in reports that are clear and accessible to non-technical stakeholders.
Granular Productivity Classifications: Classify apps/web domains with more granular categories in your Productivity Profiles.
Support for Custom Categorization Rules: You can configure your own categories using exact hostnames or regex patterns - useful when you want internal apps, partner sites, or company-specific web services to be categorized in a way that better matches your environment.
High-Speed Traffic Processing: Optimized for standard CPU-only servers, the engine can process more URLs per second with GPU scalability options.
Privacy Commitment: This service is stateful, self-contained, and has zero external communications. All URLs are stored within your environment and are never transmitted anywhere.
Operational Simplicity for IT: By default, it uses a single database for result storage, simplifying backup and maintenance for IT teams.
Improved Audit Trails: Every categorized URL is recorded by the classification engine, significantly improving traceability for compliance and security audits.
How to Update
You can update your existing server with a one-click deployment via the classification update process.
Additional Notes for Existing Customers
The introduction of TeraCat will result in some apps/URLs being categorized differently than before. This change is an intentional improvement designed to deliver higher precision and correct past inaccuracies. For example, fewer URLs will default to general categories like "Computing & Internet”, and more will be routed to granular categories such as "Streaming Media" or "Search Engine".
These shifts may affect your existing BI reports and productivity profiles that rely on specific categorization. However, the overall goal is to provide a significant improvement in categorization accuracy and granularity.
